As previously announced, Andrea Riseborough ( Death Of Stalin), Tahar Rahim (A Prophet) and Zoe Kazan ( The Big Sick) also star in the ensemble piece from the One Day and Their Finest filmmaker, who has also written the script. UK sales outfit HanWay has world sales rights with finance on the movie coming from Ingenious Media and Apollo Media. A nice group of actors in a well-intentioned film. I appreciated how it avoids getting overtly religious despite all the mentions of the church. But the story is really ridiculous, there are several misjudged scenes, and it feels very routine. No highs, no build up to a big moment, no reveal. Just completing the predictable steps. This could have been a fairytale for the holiday season, but Scherfig’s direction is too straightforward and generic for that kind of surreal touch. It was a mistake to select this as the Berlinale opener. It’s not dreadful, could do decent business as a charmer for older audiences. But it just got destroyed by critics because of the heightened expectations of such a prestigious festival slot.
