Writer - George F. Roberson. Rating - 226 vote. 2018. Directed by - Li Cheng. genre - Drama. duration - 1 Hours 25m. Flemish newspaper De Morgen has an in-depth article about it. I'll post its translation in the comments. Other Belgian news agencies are also reporting about it, including the Flemish state-owned sports broadcasting company. The mystery is getting made public just now and seems to be resolved, but the true outcome is getting published in a book and in a podcast. The podcast is made possible by both the Flemish and the Dutch public broadcasting companies so it seems to be for real. We'll have to wait a little while longer for the outcome. Summary Lucien Van Impe (1976 winner of the Tour de France) and José Manuel Fuente (1972 and 1974 winner of the Vuelta a España) were cycling rivals in the 70s. Fuente had to stop cycling in 1977 due to kidney problems. He died in 1996. In 2003, 7 years after Fuente's death, van Impe gets called by a man and gets asked to have a small reunion with Fuente. Van Impe is unsure but decides to go with his wife anyway, to see what's up. At the restaurant, they eat some mussels and talk about the past. A picture gets taken of both men but is deemed as a fake by local and national press. Van Impe is sure that the man was the real Fuente: the man looks very much alike Fuente and he is able to tell details and anecdotes only the real Fuente could know. Van Impe decides to keep quiet about the dinner. He never hears from Fuente again. Years later, when Filip Osselaer, writer, is interviewing Van Impe for his biography, Van Impe doesn't mention the story. He's afraid that he'll be called crazy. But after his biography is written and printed, he decides to share the story with Osselaer. Van Impe tells Osselaer to find out what actually happened during that night. Osselaer travels to Spain to talk to people who knew Fuente, including Fuente's widow. Osselaer is releasing a book about it on July 14 and there is also an 6-part podcast being released by the audio collective SCHIK. The article doesn't mention what Osselaer found out, you'll have to read the book or listen to the podcast for that. PS: I chose for [Resolved] as the mystery really seems to be resolved, even though the true outcome is being published in the following weeks. Edits Edit 1: The podcast is called El Tarangu, Fuente's nickname. It's a collaboration between SCHIK, Osselaer, and both the Flemish and Dutch public broadcasting companies. The podcast is in Dutch though. I will report back when the podcast is finished! Edit 2: Some people think this is a viral marketing campaign. Both the book and the podcast are intended for a Dutch-speaking audience. They don't care at all about an international audience. The story isn't that great. And even if it was a viral marketing campaign, it would be the worst one out there. There's almost no buzz around it in either Belgium or the Netherlands. If they wanted a viral marketing campaign, they would have released the picture already. The podcast is funded by the Belgian and Dutch public broadcasting companies, comparable to the BBC. They don't care about making money, they have already been paid (by my tax money. The guy who researched this mystery, did indeed write a book about it. Who cares that he did, we should be happy he took on this quest and resolved it for us. I'm not a shill lol. I wish I had posted this in a month when the true outcome is revealed (or probably earlier. It would've spared my inbox from some comments. Episode summaries I will only add interesting details to the summary I already wrote out. Please read the summary above first. Episode 1 The podcast crew meet up with Van Impe. The picture got published in a very local newspaper, Osselaer found it back in some archive (see below. They went out eating in a restaurant in Geraardsbergen, Belgium. Van Impe and his wife hesitated but they went anyway. Fuente and Lola, his new girlfriend or wife, were already there. Lola is a Belgian woman from around Geraardsbergen who lives in Spain most of the time where she met Fuente. Fuente had a wife, 2 sons and a daughter. Van Impe asked him "are you Fuente. to which the man answered "yes of course" and he put his hand over his beard to hide it. Both Van Impe and his wife then saw that the man really looked like Fuente without his beard. Fuente tells many details about their past which also persuade Van Impe and his wife that the man really is Fuente. The man tells about his life after his cycling career: lots of debt and probably fraud. Van Impe and his wife are too courteous to ask for details about his death. At the restaurant, there is a local journalist who recognizes Van Impe. He calls a photographer who takes a photo (with consent of Van Impe and the 3 other table guests. The picture got published in the (very local) newspaper "De Beiaard. This 2003 thread talks about reading it in some newspaper. The story got some attention in Belgium and in The Netherlands. He got called by a Dutch radio station, the interview is heard on the podcast. I found a 2003 thread on a Dutch forum by people who heard it on the radio. Fuente (or whoever the guy at the restaurant was) told Van Impe he would give the starting shot at some cycling race later that year. A while later, Lola called Van Impe that he wouldnt come to the race. He hasnt heard about the guy anymore. Until in 2017, someone told Van Impe at a cycling race that Fuente is in Geraardsbergen again. He told the unknown man to say hi to Van Impe and he wants to meet up again. This cliffhanger seems a bit strange to me. The picture still hasn't been published online. I'm a bit bitter about them not scanning in the picture and publishing it. Yesterday, the Flemish talk show Vive le vélo spent 7 minutes on it in which they showed the picture in the hands of one of the podcast makers. I tried to stitch it together, you can find the result here. Fuente is on the left and Van Impe is on the right. Their wives are above them with a hand on their respective husbands. Episode 2 The podcast talks about people who faked their own death, like Bennie Wint. Elizabeth Greenwood (she's so American lol) is interviewed: she researched fake deaths a lot because she had planned to fake her own death to get out of student debt. Apparently, the Philippines is a popular spot to fake your own death because it's easy to get a death certificate from a mortuary due to many unclaimed bodies. Greenwood obtained her death certificate in less than a day, but in the end, she never went through with it and wrote a book about it instead. During her research, she noticed that mostly middle-class straight white guys fake their death because of financial problems. The podcast talks about Fuente and what he meant in the cycling world in the 70s. He was one of the only guys who could challenge Eddy Merckx. Fuente grew up poor in Asturias. In old interviews, he always talks with his eyes pointed at the ground, like in the picture taken in 2003. Fuente opened a biking shop after his cycling career, but he wasn't a financial mastermind. The podcast didn't find any proof of financial problems with his shop though. They think of Fuente's medical problems as a source of financial misery: he had kidney problems. These stem from scarlet fever in his youth but maybe also from doping use. When his team's doctors told him he had to quit in 1975, he went to a different team to try his luck there. But after a while, it was clear that his career had ended. While he was incredibly talented, he had a short career, something that must have hurt him a lot. Greenwood thinks it's believable that Fuente wanted to start a new life, but another possibility is that he wanted to cash in a life insurance. It's impossible to know whether he had a life insurance though: insurers only keep such data for 5 years (after the person's death) and on top of that, they can't share such stuff with media. The podcast crew and Greenwood agree that many people must have known about Fuente faking his pretty public death if he did so: someone had to falsify the certificate of death (Fuente died in a hospital from complications after a kidney transplantation) someone had to put weight in the casket. Why go through all that stuff to go "public" and get your picture taken a few years later? Greenwood thinks it's an unlikely story. Cliffhanger of the week: the podcast crew discovers a recent picture of a man standing in front of a memorial stone for Fuente. That man is Falo Fuente, the brother of El Tarangu. He looks quite a lot like the guy in the picture taken in 2003. The podcast decides to go search for this guy. Episode 3 The podcast crew visit the memorial stone of Fuente in Asturias, the writer Filip Osselaer also joins them. Filip talks about the time he visited the house of Fuente, a bit earlier. He expected to see Maria Helena, the widow of Fuente, and was also greeted by Eduardo, Fuente's son. When Filip told them about his theory about Fuente living in Belgium for the past 15 years, they don't react hysterically or sceptically (like he expected them to) but more like "yeah whatever, et alors. When he shows them the picture taken in 2003, they tell him that that's something Falo would do. The podcast crew and Filip meet up with some people in Spain: Oscar Cudeiro (wrote a posthumous biography on Fuente) José Enrique Cima (friend and former teammate) and Modesto "Chichi" Rubiera (best friend and former teammate. The interviewers don't tell them about their investigation into his death, only that they're making a documentary. All 3 men are praising Fuente a lot, Chichi says he has never heard Fuente say a bad thing. They still miss him every day, a lot. Chichi was in the hospital when Fuente died. The interviewers conclude that the 3 men truly believe that Fuente is dead. The interviewers drop Falo's name. Apparently, Falo is Cima's brother in law (their wives are sisters. Cima arranges a meeting with Falo Fuente. When they meet Falo, the podcast women and Filip immediately recognize him as the guy in the picture. Falo leads them to Limanes to show them José Manuel Fuente's house. When they drive into Limanes, Falo tells the interviewers that he was also a cyclist but he never went pro because he had badly broken his leg (coincidentally in the year El Tarangu went pro. Falo definitely feels sorry for himself as he was at least as good at cycling as his brother. It hurt a lot that his brother was successful at cycling, while he himself had to stop. Falo tells that El Tarangu is not a name exclusive for his brother, but for any member of their family. The nickname has been passed on for centuries, nobody knows its true meaning. But of course, the public knows only 1 El Tarangu. They visit Fuentes' grave, he died of complications of his pancreas. It was very hard losing the family's champion. They go to El Tarangu's wife, who recognizes Filip but doesn't mention their early meeting. They're shown trophies and bikes, while Falo is watching proudly. In the cellar, the interviewers finally dare to start talking about the dinner in 2003. Falo starts laughing, I wish that were true, that would be a miracle. José Enrique and Falo don't believe the story, as they've seen José Manuel die in the hospital. When the interviewers show the infamous photo, José Enrique thinks he recognizes Falo. But Falo denies it's him: he has only seen Van Impe once, he has never been in Belgium, and his passport has been expired since the 70s. The podcast women really want to believe Falo, but they recognise the mystery: 7 years ago, something happened what made them not trust their instinct anymore. I'm guessing the next podcast is not gonna be about El Tarangu. Episode 4 This isn't a very eventful episode. When the podcast women were in college (following a radio education) they became friends with each other and with a guy. He had had cancer in his teens, was given up on, but miraculously survived. He had a few deaths in the family and after a while of knowing the podcast women, his mother got cancer and went into a coma. The women tried to take care of him by cooking and helping him with school work. But after a while, he let them know that his mother had recently passed. One of the podcast women didn't really believe him anymore but she said nothing. After a while, she informed the others of her suspicions and they decided to call an old friend of the guy to ask how the guy's mother is doing. The friend said he had seen the mother last week at some supermarket, the podcast crew knew enough. They informed the school and he was suspended. The writer, Filip, meets up with Johan Braeckman, a Flemish philosopher specialised in rationality. Braeckman is a prominent member of SKEPP, a skeptical organisation in Flanders. Episode 5 The podcast crew and Filip meet up with Michel, motard in cycling races for over 35 years. He has known Lola (the other woman at the dinner) for more than 50 years. He says that Lola had met the man posing as El Tarangu only a while before the dinner. Lola had an apartment in Benidorm where she fell in love with a Spanish taxi driver who drove her to the airport. Eventually, the Spaniard moved to Belgium where she was introduced to Michel as Victor. Eventually, she told Michel that he was a famous cyclist: El Tarangu. Because Michel knows Van Impe a bit (even though Van Impe couldn't recognize Michel on the picture) Lola asked him to arrange a meeting. That's why Michel was also at the dinner. Michel didn't ask anyone about El Tarangu supposedly being dead because he felt privileged of being there: it's hard to get into the cycling world and he didn't want to be nosy. Michel says that Victor could understand Dutch but not speak it. Victor also went cycling on the Muur van Geraardsbergen every now and then, after which he went drinking with other Spaniards from Geraardsbergen. The podcast crew visit psychiatrist Celine Matton. They hypothesize that the man posing as El Tarangu may have suffered from grandiose delusions (GD. Dr. Matton explains what GDs are and says that there's always a small part of truth in them, e. g. someone who thinks he's the CEO of Disney might love Disney movies. Or a cycling fan with lots of cycling knowledge going through a psychosis thinking he's a cycling legend. Their brains make up all sorts of excuses to keep the delusion real for them, until the delusion breaks at some point. If someone else breaks the delusion, you have no idea what will happen in their brain. At the moment Nele, Siona, Mirke and Filip met up with Michel, Victor had gone back to Spain because he and Lola had broken up. That must have been around in January or February of 2019. The only person who could lead the interviewers to Victor is Lola, but she doesn't want to talk to them. Michel is asked if he could arrange a rendezvous with Lola. He immediately calls her but she says she doesn't want any contact. As a last resort, the podcast crew go back to Spain again and search for Victor themselves. Episode 6 Michel knew Victor's last name which lead the podcast crew to his Facebook profile. Victor checked himself in a lot in some bar in Benidorm (Spain) so that's where the podcast crew (Nele and Siona, Mirke stayed in Belgium) and Filip will try to look for him. His Facebook profile doesn't contain pictures but using his phone number, they found his WhatsApp which does contain his picture (stalking level 100. At some point, Filip and the translator are waiting in the bar when they spot Victor, they call Nele and Siona. In the meanwhile, Victor had walked away but they find him in a supermarket. After some translation difficulties, he agrees to drink a coffee with them after hearing the name Lucien Van Impe. They ask him if he remembers the dinner in 2003, which he does. They show him an old article from a local newspaper about the dinner, why did they write that? Victor answers "because Van Impe used to ride with me in the Kas team. Nele asks Victor whether he is Fuente. Victor answers "si" and "claro" it's clear, no. He explains that he had money problems, due to his cycling shop. When asked how he faked his own death, he explains that it's more of a mistake: a journalist said I died but that wasn't me, that was my brother Falo. The curtain has fallen. Three weeks later, Siona and Filip meet with Johan Braeckman, the philosopher. Braeckman thinks that Victor knows deep down that he's not really El Tarangu, otherwise he would not be functioning as well as he did. That's also what the interviewers thought in Spain: they saw through his lies. For example, Victor told some fun facts about El Tarangu, but was always talking about him in the 3rd person. Braeckman calls Victor a real con man, using obscure cycling facts to mislead Van Impe into thinking he was really El Tarangu. In Benidorm, he did the same. But once they were talking about the personal life of El Tarangu, Victor made many grave mistakes: he did not know Chichi (best friend of Fuente) or Eduardo (son of Fuente) or the actual name of Fuente's wife. During the meeting in Benidorm, Nele tells Victor that she doesn't believe him. She asks him for proof but he doesn't care whether they believe him or not. Instinctively, they decide not to tell him that they met up with Falo or who Chichi and Eduardo are. Braeckman thinks that Victor created a fantasy world for himself, to be someone special. For the philosopher, it isn't really a lie because the word "liar" is too broad. Victor made his own castle in the air, extremely large, and went to live in it. Braeckman compares it with asking someone out in bar: you tell yourself it's going to end well as to get some confidence, even though it's an illusion. Everybody uses some form of self-deception, Victor took it up a few notches. When the podcast crew and Filip tell Lucien Van Impe about their discoveries, he is relieved. He and his wife didn't go mad. They're both happy that the interviewers were also believing Victor for a few seconds. They're disappointed that Victor didn't admit it or excused himself, but it's finished for them. Back to the interview in Benidorm. The interviewers ask Victor about Lola, he tells them that she's 5 minutes away. She's on vacation and is visiting Victor. She doesn't want to be interviewed but allows a short talk. The interviewers ask her what's going on with Victor being El Tarangu, to which she responds that she also has no clue (he never gave her clear answers) but also that she doesn't care. They're still friends. Lola leaves. The interviewers ask Victor if he's happy, he answers that he is not: his friends are telling him to go to Cuba or the Dominicans because Benidorm is not suited for him anymore (too much parties. He has everything, if he had less, he could have had something to dream of. They want to go to a restaurant, to end the day. When they get in Victor's car, they hear a pretty relevant song: Me olvidé de vivir by Julio Iglesias. Julio is singing "I forgot to live. I lived on applause, wrapped in dreams. by hiding so much truth with lies, I cheated myself. without realizing that I was the loser. Tl;dr Van Impe didn't eat with José Manuel Fuente but with a guy thinking he is. That guy, Victor, met a Belgian woman while driving a tourist bus and ended up in Geraardsbergen. He told everyone and himself that he is El Tarangu. Pretty disappointing ending, I had really hoped that Fuente had faked his own death.

Watch movie jos c3 a9 review. Watch Movie josé corti. “Terrible things will always happen. They happened on Kiffex and they happen on Naboo and they happen on Tatooine. There will always be a war, and there will always be someone who wants us locked up. But the only thing we can do is survive, Sen. Survive until they wont let us. ” When I heard the words “Jawa POV, ” I instantly knew that From a Certain Point of View is something I simply must read. Its no secret by now that Im madly in love with Star Wars. And my obsession with slice of life and perspectives of more ordinary people is well established. A crossover of the two? A match made in heaven, despite my dislike of short stories and anthologies. From a Certain Point of View is a little unusual for an anthology in that it has a plot – its a retelling of A New Hope from the POV of minor characters and all the stories are in chronological order. Some comedic and a lot of them sad. Each doubles as a chapter. Some sections drag a little – the cantina section (did we really need to see Han shoot Greedo five times. and the one near the end from the POV of Resistance pilots for example – and others felt a little pointless, but the overall effect was wonderful. I also enjoyed how it ties together A New Hope and some of the newer material. There are clear references to Rogue One (of course) and characters from other movies are often mentioned, if not appearing outright. Since its an anthology of 40 short stories and various other odds and ends, the quality is, of course, inconsistent. Some are great, some not really, most are in between. But Im glad to say that out of all 40, I only disliked four ( Beru Whitesun Lars, Added Muscle, and Whills, all because of the writing style, and Palpatine, because it was in verse) and would choose no less than eleven to highlight as particularly great. Over a quarter. With the other 65% falling somewhere between “lovely concept, but not quite toplist material” or “readable but kind of meh. ” My highlights include: Stories in the Sand by Griffin McElroy: Jawas! I decided to bump the book way up the TBR because someone let slip there was a Jawa POV (I love the adorable little shits) and man, it did not disappoint. Its about a little scavenger with a special love for stories and I couldnt help but like him. Master and Apprentice by Claudia Gray: Cant say much about this one except that its well-written and took me entirely by surprise. I look forward to Claudia Grays tie-in books. The Red One by Rae Carson: POV of the red droid Luke and his uncle did not choose. Holy shit this one is sad. Good, but sad. The Secrets of Long Snoot by Delilah S. Dawson: This one gives us the perspective of the Kubaz spy, aka the alien with the long snoot. Shows some of the discrimination and prejudice the non-humans face. Born in the Storm by by Daniel José Older: This one is about one of the Stormtroopers who got mind-tricked filling in a form to report the incident. A lot of grumbling about sand (implying how its coarse and irritating and gets everywhere of course) and how much he hates his job ensues. Hilarious, amazing, I need more. The Trigger by Kieron Gillen: I really need to read the Aphra comics because I found the POV of her as someone who likes neither the Resistance nor the Empire very interesting. Of MSE-6 and Men by Glen Weldon: First of all, the title cracked me up. A fucking mouse droid story! Of course this would be my thing. It also features a (gay) affair between a stormtrooper and an officer, but the ending…well, it put a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. Even so, it made it into the highlights list simply because mouse droid. Bump by Ben Acker and Ben Blacker: Another stormtrooper who only wants to shower and end his shift, but of course, the rebels invading the Death Star ruin his plans. Funny. Great balance between humanizing him and reminding us hes a bad guy and Id love if it was longer. End of Watch by Adam Christopher: Imperial bureaucrat on the Death Star just leaving her shift aka yet another person with a bullshit job. If it wasnt already clear by now, I love that. Couldnt be more up my alley if it tried. The Baptist by Nnedi Okorafor: The infamous trash monster story, the one you usually hear about when someone recs this anthology. Very unique. The Angle by Charles Soule: Lando, watching the aftermath and musing about the cynics and idealists. Another neutral party POV. He was having one of those patriotic sway type moments, when the whole Galactic Empire seemed to sparkle in his eyes and whatever ridiculous mission was ahead appeared infinitely manageable—all part of the grand design. And thats all well and good, but there was sand in my butt crack and the day wasnt getting any cooler, so quite frankly I wished hed hurry up and get to the point. Essentially, the more minor the character and the more bullshit their job, the more I liked it. I wish I could get a full novel of some of those, especially the antics of bored stormtroopers who are sick of dealing with sand up their asscrack or bureaucrats going on about their daily life. The only bigger issue I have is that while a few stories include or mention queer characters, none of those survive. A lot of it is due to the nature of this anthology and the fact that a huge percentage of the stories in general focus on characters who die because thats how it is (anyone on Alderaan or the Death Star is doomed and we know it. But I still wish we got at least one queer character who managed to get away somehow. It would not have been too much of a stretch, especially not compared to some other things. So Im torn between feeling desperately glad that repersentation might be happening at least in books, and angry and sick of yet another book that ended in Bury Your Gays. Enjoyment: 4/5 Execution: 4/5 Recommended to: any and all Star Wars fans, especially those wondering how more ordinary characters get by – even if you dont like anthologies, read this; anyone who still has Tie-In or Slice of Life or Retelling to tick off, or wants to do Five Short Stories on Hard Mode Not recommended to: obviously, people who havent watched A New Hope, those tired of queer characters not surviving Bingo squares: Slice of Life, Tie-In, Long Title, Retelling (it's not a movie novelization, it's a straight-up retelling) Five Short Stories More reviews on my blog, To Other Worlds.

Hi, my name is José David and I want to share the truth via snail mail! I'm searching for people where we can have rapport (a close and harmonious relationship in which we are concerned understand about each other's feelings or ideas and communicate well. Connection is something we are losing and I feel a dichotomy between being connected via internet than actually being connected. I want to feel a link with the people that would love to share letters with me. A little bit about myself: Since I was small kid, I had a lot of artistic expression. I used to write little and silly stories, and now, I'm not writing a lot and I would love to have inspiration talking with other people. I want to be a writer and I'm always writing, mainly about how I'm feeling or subjects that interest me. And I really love to use good equipment to write, I love my Montblanc pen. Other artistic expression that I have, and it's blooming, is photography. Last year I started a career in it, in parallel with an engineer, because I crave for art and creation, something that my engineering degree can't give to me. I'm shooting in film and digital, but I prefer and always carry my film camera. And I love the tranquility that I received inside the darkroom developing my film. I want to use photography to show you my reality. Music has been a very important pillar in my life, but my relationship with it has it's ups and downs. When I was a kid, I played piano but I left, and in recent years I tried to get back to it, without having success. I still want to be a pianist, and someday, I will be one. Apart from piano, I play a little bit classical guitar. Communication is very important to me, and that's why I love learning new languages, actually I can speak fluently in Spanish (my mother tongue) and English, so if you wish, we can write in your language preference. Apart from those two, I'm a French and Japanese student. If you know one of those (or maybe both) please, let me practice with you, primarily Japanese, my French is very rusty. I also want to learn these languages to read a lot of books in their language, and I read a lot. We can talk about books if you want, and movies also. But there is a subject that I really love and hope to work in that in a future: video games. I really love a game with great design, narrative and gameplay. Games as a media to tell a story, it can be very powerful. I love a good game as a I love a good book. I haven't travel much this year to other countries, but I love it (who doesn't. I adore to watch new sights and have new experiences. I love making new friends around the world! I have traveled to France, USA and various countries in Central America. I hope to expand that. Please, let us show our reality and our sights, our thoughts and doings. Let's share photographs and drawings, I don't care if you think they're bad, most likely they're not (my drawings are awful, by the way. Let's connect and know each other. If you're interested in exchanging letters, please PM me! This is just a little introduction, but I promise you that my letters are going to be long. I'm very excited in doing this. Let's be pen pals.

If anyone receives this: My name if Frank Carver, Im a pilot for United Airlines, and was co-pilot for flight UA 343 from Denver to Seattle. The plane was hijacked, many are dead, and we have no way of getting back control. We are now in northern Montana. Something terrible is about to happen. Report this to the U. S. military and get them to shoot down our plane. Dont try to save us, it is too late. Shoot down the plane before they can finish their ritual! Edit: Full story below It seemed that tonight would be a quiet night for me, though. Yesterday evening, I had just landed at Santa Fe after a long flight, and my plane was refueling when some minor technical difficulty meant that we would not be moving for at least twelve hours. Not enough time to visit the local nightlife, but enough to have a good sleep. I was about to leave the pilots lounge when an assistant came to me, visibly exhausted. She tried to smile to me. “ Captain Carver? Im sorry to interrupt you, sir, but you received a priority request. Flight UA 343 needs a co-pilot. Youve been requested by name because of your extraordinary records. ” I raised an eyebrow. First of all I was already quite tired and happy to go to sleep. Also, I did not have ‘extraordinary records. I did my job without mistake, but did not do any overtime or was displaying any excessive zeal. Im a good pilot, dont get me wrong, but nothing to be noted. “ You need a co-pilot? ” I asked calmly with my sweetest voice, “ then maybe you can take my co-pilot. José Whitaker, great guy, looking to prove his worth. He would love to do that. I can call him right- “ “ Captain Meyers asked for you. ” These five words from the assistant stopped me right then, with my mouth still open. Now you might not know this name, but Meyers is a legend in the company. He actually owns a non-negligible share of the company. Comes from a family of pilots. His great-grand-father is said to have been in the inner circle that launched the company and made it what it is today. “ For me? ” I asked, unable to believe it. “ Captain Meyers is here and asked for me? ” “ He did, sir. Now if you would like to follow me. ” There was nothing I could say. I could not refuse this and hope to keep my job. And even if I did keep it I would curse myself till the end of the world for refusing such an opportunity. I stood up and followed the secretary until the plane entrance. The whole cabin crew was there, listening to the captain talking. Probably a joke, as the corridor erupted in laughter when we got closer. Meyers noticed us a few seconds later, his blue eyes pale as the glaciers in the mountains on the top of the world. He was considerably taller than me, at the very least two meters, and built like a goddamn Terminator. While his muscles and nerves seemed carved in iron, his arms and legs were unusually long, giving him an almost avian appearance. The guy was meant to fly. “ Captain Carver, ” he said while offering a handshake, “ pleasure to meet you. Shall we? ” He pointed towards the plane with a movement of his head. I looked outside and was surprised to see a heavily customized 737. Something deeply out of regulation. Almost looked like a prototype in some way. I heard about this new version but did not know it was operational. “ Is this…? ” I whispered, afraid to ask the question. “ It is, ” answered Meyers with a large smile, “ I wish I could give you a full tour, but we are already late. My usual co-pilot disappeared six hours ago. Very strange of him. It flies exactly as your off-the-mill 737. Good for you? ” I nodded. 737s are what I fly most of the time. One thing made me nervous, though: Meyers mentioned his “usual” co-pilot. Now you might not know that, but commercial pilots dont choose their co-pilots to avoid a whole lot of problems. That he could fly with his usual co-pilot, crew and plane meant a level of autonomy unheard of in our company, and probably in any charter in the world. Also, when he mentioned that his friend disappeared, the crew shuddered. Not just worry, they were outright scared. I could almost feel the shiver down their spine, which made me shiver in return. They knew something I didnt. No reason for me to worry more than necessary at that moment, but that was my first warning. I wish I had listened to my guts. “ Good. Now lets get flight-ready. We are yet to discover a world that waits for the late. ” The passengers embarked not long after. Families, couples, business men, all that you could expect for night flights. Even a group of friends obviously going on a bachelor party. We saluted each of them before they joined their seats, and we took off not long after. The first part of the flight was without issue, so I wont talk much about it. I tried to start a conversation with Meyers, but he always answered with two words maximum. I eventually asked him why he chose me specifically, which actually made him laugh. “ Your last name. My family knew a Carver. Maybe you are related. Could be fun. ” That is all I could get from him. Not pushing my luck any further, I kept my attention on the flight, making sure not to make any mistake. Everything was going smoothly when we received a radio call from a weird frequency. Not the usual radio talks that we receive all the time from various control towers. This sounded almost like white noise. After few seconds, I realized it sounded like wind. A picture appeared in my head of wind blowing in a rugged black-rocked valley, with an impossibly white sky above it. I shook my head, blaming it on my sleepiness, then noticed Meyers was staring at me. He seemed to try to judge me with his eagle eyes, then pushed a button to answer to the radio frequency. To my surprise, he whistled. The most beautiful whistle I had heard in my life. Radio went blank for about twenty seconds, then an extremely high-pitched voice came to life. It sounded as if whoever was talking on the radio was blowing on the radio the whole time, and hissing. “ Sshadow movess. Hold the Rift. Do what you musst. Coordinatess follow. ” I looked at Meyers, incomprehension probably visible on my face. I was about to ask him what the hell was that when he said: “ We are changing course, Frank, no questions asked. ” He seemed sincerely sorry and concerned. Obviously this call meant something to him. He opened an internal channel with the cabin crew leader, a charming lady called Margaret Turner. “ Mag, the Flock will be spent. Get ready. ” Something was obviously happening. When the captain started to change direction, heading now entirely North, I had to act. “ Captain Meyers, my apologies but if we must change course we must inform our-“ “ We will not inform anyone. Im sorry you have to be part of this. Stay ready if anything happens. ” His voice was not inviting any kind of answer. I was thinking of a better way to reformulate my opposition to this legend of a man when Margaret came inside the cockpit. She lost the permanent smile that seemed printed on her face. Her eyes were cold and calculating. “ So this is it, ” she said in a low voice, “ where are we going, sir? ” Something was happening here that I did not understand. The respect I had for Captain Meyers had delayed me, but I would not stay silent in front of this. The whole life I spent as a pilot was against this kind of unexplained change of course. “ The coordinates received are in northern Montana, ” I started with anger brewing in my voice, “ but I wont let this plane go there without knowing why or without informing ground control. Even if you give the order, Captain Meyers. ” Both the captain and the crew leader looked at each other, then Meyers sighed. A long, tired sigh. He slowly shook his head, muttering something to himself. “ You want to know what is going on? All right. Turner, show him. ” I looked to Margaret, not really feeling reassured, waiting for her to do some kind of trick, pull out a map, secret instructions, anything. Instead, she went to the door of the cockpit, opening it. I could see the main corridor. Most passengers were asleep. My eyes caught Margarets gaze. “ Its in the cargo hold, ” whispered Margaret, “ please follow me and be quiet. ” After few seconds of hesitation and a last look to my station I stood up and followed Turner. The rest of the cabin crew was on the war foot. While the corridor was asleep, all the crew was working at full efficiency, preparing God-knows-what. I did not focus to see what buttons they were pressing or what box they were opening, but I was shocked by how silent they were. It was like if air did not move when they were half-running from one side of the plane to another. Thats when I heard Margaret softly whistle. It was almost impossible to hear in the constant noise of the plane, but two crew members answered by a different kind of whistle. I understood at that moment. This was a code. They were trained to do something, and that something was happening now. Were they terrorists? Some sort of crazy suicidal cult? I had to do something. I looked around at the faces of many passengers. Were there some air marshals in there? It was pretty much my only chance. I did not care if I was making a mistake or being paranoid. Regarding the circumstances, I would be forgiven once we hit the ground, for sure. What if they were taking me somewhere far to execute me? All of a sudden, I shouted at the top of my lungs: “ The crew is hijacking the pla-“ I did not have time to finish my sentence. Margaret turned around lightning-fast and struck me with a powerful blow to the side of the head. I fell on a nearby passenger who was still sleeping, losing consciousness before I could see any kind of reaction around. When I woke up, the whole plane was silent. No whispering, no one watching a movie with minimum audio, nothing. I realized I was sitting in a passengers seat, and that my back was wet somehow. Slowly opening my eyes I looked around. Everybody was awake, now, looking absolutely terrified. And the crew, patrolling back and forth, was now openly carrying knifes and, for some, handguns. “ You are awake, ” said Margaret Turner, who was coming back from the tail of the plane towards the cockpit, “I hope you had a pleasant sleep. ” She was staring at me, disgust on her face. I tried to say something, but my tongue was swollen, and I barely gargled something. She snorted. “ Because of your little bravado we had to take control of the plane by force, ” she grunted, “ kill the three air marshals, as well as fourteen passengers who tried to fight back. Are you proud of yourself? ” I looked behind me, beginning to understand why my back was wet. To my horror, the seat on which I was sitting was soaked in blood. I felt nauseous, and looked back at Margaret in anguish and incomprehension. “ Why? ” I managed to articulate. She didnt bother to answer. Starting to walk again towards the cockpit, she just added: “ Now be a good boy and stay there, well call you if we need you. ” I looked around, confused. Other passengers were looking at me with absolute terror in their eyes. I took few minutes to process what was happening. We were flying straight, towards northern Montana, I thought. The bodies of the dead marshals and passengers had been taken care of, as only stains of blood remained in the corridor. I heard a loud slapping noise behind me. A woman screamed in pain and surprise, and other people gasped. “ No talking! ” I heard a crew member shout. I had the worst headache, and took my head between my hands for some time, trying to ease the pain. It took some more minutes before I notice a man on my left, on the other side of the corridor, trying to get my attention. The man looked in his early forties, well built, but nothing remarkable. Definitely a mister nobody at first sight. He took a piece of paper in his hand, waited that no crew members were around, and then showed it to me. It was all written in capital letters, very clearly. Having a good eyesight, it was easy for me to read it, even if there was a bit of distance. NO TALK THEY HEAR ALL HERE TO HELP NEED YOU I was flabbergasted for a second. Was he also an air marshal? Did not look like one. I shrugged, shaking my head. I had a lot of questions, but without paper on my own to answer, I could just exaggerate my mouth movement without making a sound, so he could read on my lips: “ How? ” He was obviously ready for this question, for he took another paper on which he had already written something. A crew member walked the corridor between us, looking at me on the way, so we both waited everything was clear before he showed the sheet of paper to me. KILL CAPTAIN PEN IN EAR ONE STRIKE The plane shook a bit. We were in a turbulence area. It only lasted for few seconds, but I felt shook to my core. To kill Captain Meyers? How would I reach the cockpit? Why kill him? And if the crew kills me in retaliation, who would fly the aircraft? Our priority was to save the passengers, not doom us all. Looking back at the man, I pointed him with one finger, again not making a sound but trying to make him read on my lips. “ Who? ” The man was not happy with this question, made a weird face, and then directed my attention again on the paper asking me to kill Meyers by thrashing a pen in his ear. That was a weird way to kill someone. The man turned around the paper. Something was written on the back. EAR ONLY WAY TO BE SURE TO KILL IT The mention of “it” somehow froze my blood. They were terrorists, madmen, but for sure they were still people. For some reason part of me believed that something else was happening here. This was all so … Unreal. Few hours ago I was preparing to get a good night of sleep. I pointed him again, asking “ Who” he was. Visibly upset, he took a new piece of paper. With infinite care not to make any sound, he wrote one word for about a minute before showing it to me. INQUISITION That was it. This was all a bad dream. What the hell did that mean? Were everyone here getting crazy? Maybe a hallucinatory gas in the ventilation system? All that was happening could not be. How could I even get to the cockpit anyway? The cockpit door opened violently. Margaret came out, almost running in the corridor, looking at me. I dont know what came into my mind at this moment but I discreetly took a pen from the seat-bag in front of me, putting it in my pocket. Turner was visibly preoccupied by something. “ Frank, come in the cockpit. Now. ” I stared back at her, determined not to let me be bullied. “ Why? What is happening? I wont do anything without an expl-“ She pulled out a handgun, probably stolen on an air marshals body, pointing directly at my head. “ Now. ” I lost my shit. It was the first time someone was threatening me with a gun. At such close distance, I felt air leaving my lungs, stopping from moving. My skull was itching, as if I could feel the barrel. I nodded and got up. She took me to the cockpit, where Meyers was in the middle of a conversation on the radio. I dont know who he was talking to but he was incredibly focused. His voice was soft as honey. “ As I said, my co-pilot Frank Carver will soon fix this mechanical issue. Once done, we will be able to change course. Will be very quick. Please, we have a lot of people, here. ” Margaret showed me the co-pilot seat before pushing me on it. She leaned forward to whisper in my ear: “ Tell them all is repaired and we will change direction. We need you to give us one minute. ” I supposed I looked like a confused toddler, not understanding the conversion, while she handed me the headset in one hand, still keeping me at point-blank with the gun in her other hand. “ This is Frank Carver, United Airlines flight 343. All is fixed, now. ” Siegfried Meyers immediately and quietly stood up and walked out of the cockpit, towards the tail of the plane. What was going on? I took a look on the radar and noticed with horror that other aircrafts were following us. Mixed feelings were rushing in my brain. Someone noticed we had been hijacked, and had sent military planes. At least, we caught ground controls attention. What was very unusual was that there were not two jet fighters, as protocol commands, but four. And they were not just regular planes, too. They were stealth fighters, broadcasting their position so we would know they were behind us. Our radar would never pick them up otherwise. What were four F-22s doing behind us, in Wyoming, so little time after we got hijiacked? “ United Airlines 343 this is your final warning, ” said a womans voice on the radio, “ you are entering a restricted area. Turn around or you will be shot down. You have thirty seconds. ” This was horrible. I was going to die in thirty seconds, either from an Air Force missile or from a bullet at the back of my head. Why were they so vehement on shooting down a plane before we could correct our course? Why was norther Montana off-limit? What the hell was happening? “ Please, wait! Just give us a bit more-“ “ Twenty seconds. Change course now. ” I was starting to turn around when I felt the weight of my 737 shift. It was as if something incredibly heavy just appeared inside the plane. When you are an experienced pilot, you can feel this kind of thing. Just as if you know, when you drive a car, when one of your luggage just swings around left to right, you know? Something weighting few tons was now in the cargo hold. Turner put her left hand on mine, still keeping me at gunpoint, preventing me from changing course. “ He is out. ” A red signal bipped on the control panel. An alarm signal. It simply said CARGO DOOR 2 OPEN. “ Ten seconds, ” said the female pilot voice in the radio, “ may God watch over your souls. Im sorr… Wait. ” I felt the back of my plane shaking heavily. It was impossible, but it felt as if… “ UA 343, you have something on your hull. Holy mother of… What is that thing? ” It was like being a spectator to an unfathomable horror. What now? I felt like falling in an elevator. What to do? Will I die? What was happening? I turned to Turner. She was smiling. The plane felt lighter, all of a sudden. As if whatever was on the hull just jumped away. I heard a scream in the radio. On the radar, all four F-22s went back to stealth mode. What was not stealthy, though, were the missile barrage they unleashed. To my surprise, they were not aiming for us. I stared at the radar screen, watching the volley of missiles fly in every direction, trying to hit something behind me. This was when the first explosion happened. Did they it whatever was attacking them? A second explosion. I tried to look behind me through the glass, to no avail. I saw a couple of missiles, few times faster than me, passing us on our left, having visibly missed their target. I also noticed some high-caliber bullets behind fired in quick succession, also obviously missing their mark. The pilots were using everything they had. I was paralyzed by fear. I considered fighting back against Margaret, who was focused on the radar, but something told me it was a fight I could not win. On the radar, two objects appeared, quickly losing altitude. I was trying to understand what it was, when the impossible answer popped in my mind. It was a stealth fighter that, all of a sudden had lost all stealth capacity. It had been cut in two. The female voice on the radio screamed, this time on an open distress sequence. Was it a mistake, a button pushed in panic, or was she trying to warn me as well? “ This is Warlock Leader, my flight is down, I need… Oh Lord, he is on me! He is on-“ Indistinct screams of horror and pain came in the radio for a dozen more seconds, before an F-22 popped into my radar. It was spiraling out of control, as if it had lost its aerodynamic capacities, or if there was no pilot inside. Not long after, the several-tons-heavy weight went again in the cargo hold, before disappearing almost instantly. The alarm signal indicating one door was open stopped bipping. I kept flying forwards our destination in northern Montana, barely capable to speak. Margaret had a soft chuckle before leaving the cockpit. Just before closing the cockpit behind me she added: “ Steady as she goes. It will be over soon. ” I looked around for something useful. Calling for help would not be of any use, it appeared, but that was all I could do. Something terrible was happening here, and I had to make it stop. As we flew further into Montana, I noticed the moon becoming paler and paler, and somehow, the obscurity of the night increased. I dont know how to explain that, but it someone controlled my eyes as if it were a screen, and that someone lowered the luminosity setting. The temperature stayed the same, but I started to feel cold. I found a PDA, hidden under the co-pilot seat. It was connected to the internet, somehow, and had a very soft soundproof membrane around it. How convenient, I thought to myself. Why would the co-pilot have something like this here? Not wanting to take any chance I put the PDA in my pocket. Two seconds later Meyers pushed the cockpit door, coming inside. Immediately I looked at him. He was quite pale, smiling. Was that… Meat and blood, around his mouth? “ Good work, Carver. I knew it was a good idea to keep you alive. ” He sat back at the captains seat, immediately taking control. He started diving, quickly lowering the altitude of the plane. We plunged into the clouds. I heard Margaret shouting at someone in the corridor. “ Its a shame whats happening, really, ” started Meyers on the tone of the friendly conversation, “ all these years of hard work, only to have it all thrown off the window because another Plane became a little too greedy. ” I did not understand what he was talking about. Was he trying to befriend me? In that case, only one thing to say: “ You dont have to do this, Siegfried, ” I began, “ we can still-“ “Dont think you know me, Carver, ” interrupted the Captain, “ or the reasons why I do this. If it can make you feel better, know that our sacrifice will save a lot of lives, actually. ” Was that a bluff? Why would he say that now? He looked at me with eyes as piercing as those of a hawk. “ You see, Carver, something bad happened in Montana. You would call it terrifying, actually. Usually, first-responders can take care of it. Not this time, though. ” I shook my head slowly. Was this guy also part of this Inquisition? The crew were a bunch of brutal murderers. Why was Meyers messing with me? “ So youll tell me you are the good guys? That you killed the marshals and passengers out of good will? And those pilots, what happ-“ “Im not saying were the good guys. ” Meyers interrupted me, once again. “ Im saying we have a common enemy on this. Your Inquisition could not succeed, this time, for whatever reason. And now there is a Rift open right here, in the middle of the States. There is no hiding that anymore. ” I had a lot of question. So many. Was he bullshitting me to make me cooperate? I thought about what to say next for a while, but before I spoke, he pointed something to my right. I did not see what he was showing, even though I have great eyesight. He was fixedly staring at something that not even the radar picked up. “ Well, well, well, what have we got here, ” said Meyers while quickly opening a map of the continental US with one of his hand. He read it for a moment, seemingly incredibly focused. Was he making mental calculations? “ Just what I thought, ” he finally added, “ transport aircraft convoy, straight from Area 51, heading for the Flatheads. ” He pushed a button, opening an internal transmission to the crew. “ The Plane of Life is playing its hand. Seems like they have the same idea as us. They are already going to the south of the Rift. ” Margaret answered, her voice echoing through the cockpit. “ Judith? That shapeshifting bitch is again trying to control everything. Oh, how I hate Life…” Meyers seemed shaken by that name. Usually he is still as a statue, but I could feel he was not comfortable there. “ She is not our enemy here either, Margaret, ” he said as gently as possible, “ and she probably found a way to make a truce. They are escorted by Air Force fighters, and they are headed straight to a little town south of the Rift where the whole goddamn Army is deploying. The Inquisition is probably trying to stop the flood there. ” I looked at the map, trying to understand what the hell they were talking about. Meyers had accelerated the plane way beyond the maximum speed a 737 is supposed to have. I considered the pen in my pocket. Was it my chance? Was it really the best thing to do here, now, to try to kill him? “Ill stay in the cargo hold, ready to act, ” told Meyers, “ but I need you to stay here. Ill lock the trajectory and communications, but if someone call on the radio, you have to bullshit them long enough so we can reach our destination, after the Canadian border. Can I ask you to do this, Carver? ” Now HE was asking me a favor? How could he trust me with anything? I was a prisoner here. Did he count on my survival instinct to not ask anyone approaching to shoot us down? “Margaret will prepare the passengers for… Well. Ill lock the cockpit so you stay here. Dont make me call Marg and ask her to shoot you, okay? ” He stood up, ready to leave. It was my last chance to try to kill him. I felt the pen in one of my pocket, the PDA in another. Then it occurred to me: I was about to stay alone for a while in the cockpit. “ What after we arrive there, ” I asked Meyers. “ Then we call for backup, and we hold the line. ” He smiled at me and entered a vocal command to lock down navigation and radio control. This custom 737 had a damn Siri installed. Meyers left, locking the cockpit behind him. I stood, came closer to the door, and heard him talking to Turner. “ Prepare the Flock for the ritual. We are running out of time. Well do it mid-air. Knives only. ” I sat down in horror. Whatever they had in mind was going to be horrible. What kind of sadistic sacrificial ritual were they planning? How could I stop them? So here I have been since, frantically typing on my stolen PDA, trying to get my story out. I dont think anybody can stop this plane now. Not the Air Force, not the Inquisition passenger, and certainly not me. In a few minutes we will be at the rendezvous point that was given by the hissing voice over the white noise in the radio. I hope someone reads this. If you read this, you probably know more about what is happening in Montana than I do. Hopefully what information I give will help. May the Lord above have mercy on us all.
